NCCU Observes International Credit Union Day, October 17, 2019

PRESS RELEASE

October 18, 2019

On October 17, 2019, credit union members around the world celebrated International Credit Union Day® (ICUDay), an annual event to commemorate the credit union movement’s impact and achievements.

The theme for this year is "Local Service, Global Reach".  It speaks to how each credit union serves a local community—and it is because of that local service in communities across the world that we have a global credit union movement that’s now 260 million members strong.

ICU Day is a celebration of the impact credit unions and other financial cooperatives have made—and continue to make for their members. It is also a chance to be thankful for the lives and communities that have been improved by our movement, to remember our proud history and promote awareness of the credit union difference.

The National Cooperative Credit Union Ltd (NCCU) and  credit unions in Dominica, observed not only the day but the entire week with activities and events touching their  members and communities.

Credit unions are unique because they are  not-for-profit, democratically controlled, financial  and member-owned cooperatives that provide an effective and viable alternative to for-profit financial institutions.

The credit union movement's cooperative spirit is embraced by members in 117 countries worldwide. More than 89,000 credit unions exist globally, providing financial services for their members, and are recognized as a force for positive economic and social change.

Credit unions pool their members' assets to provide affordable loans and financial services in the best interest of members, not to earn shareholder profits. Credit Unions, and other financial cooperatives are founded on community service, a principle that has set them apart for more than 150 years.

The National Co-operative Credit Union Ltd  (NCCU) is an amalgamation of seven (7) credit unions and was established on November 1, 2019.  It is the largest credit union in the OECS with over 48,000 members,  assets of  $625.7M,  and an island wide footprint of seven branches and 5 sub offices.
